We’ve been reading the new Dr. Seuss science books lately (like There’s No Place Like Space), and Widget is picking up much more than I thought he would. I agreed to the books (for ages 4-
because they have the Dr. Seuss rhymes and illustrations but not the mind-numbing effects that the first two sometimes have on parents. At least this way I’m picking up a little something, I figured! After all, now I know the world’s smallest mammal (from Is a Camel a Mammal?), five different kinds of maples (from I Can Name 50 Trees Today), and that armadillos always have four babies, all of the same gender. Not bad for bedtime stories!
As I was uploading an avatar to my wordpress.com account yesterday, Widget ran over and wanted to see. He saw the picture of a planet and called it Mars. Not too far off, I suppose. They’re similar in color and, from a distance, look much the same. But I was feeling cocky and said, actually, it’s Venus. Do you know anything about Venus? I was just goofing around. But he remembered the pictures. He puckered his face up and said, “hot!” Oh, yeah!
