When a page or a video takes a while to load, the message at the bottom of the screen often says “Buffering … X%.” Then we sit there while it loads. It’s hard enough to wait for a page to load when you’re 30-something, but to a 2-year-old, it can seem like eternity. Widget used to get frustrated at Noggin.com when a 2-minute video stopped partway through. Particularly since it stops over and over partway through, buffering. But last week, I taught him a new word.
Buffering.
Now, when the music stops and the video freezes, Widget sucks his thumb just a little more, smiles a bit, and says around his thumb, “buff.”
Hee hee.
Annoyed? Not any more. It’s an opportunity for my child to learn patience and tech-speak. And for the few times a week that we cuddle up on the couch and watch Laurie Berkner and Dan Zanes at Noggin.com, that’s good enough for me.
