Fighting … Day 2

We were able to have a good playdate today, with an almost-3 year old friend and her little brother, who just turned 1 on Friday!  Widget and his friends played with toys, little people, cars, and hammers, and the 1 year old discovered the rhythm sticks that Grampa made for us this summer.  He got quite a kick out of those, banging one against the one his mom held, and pointing around the room with it too.  I think he even tried to play the xylophone.  He and Widget also played with the handheld cars, Playskool Wheel Pals, that Widget fell in love with as a 9 month old and didn’t leave the house without for over a year.  These toys are great, soft plastic grippable cars that fit just perfectly in a toddler’s little hand but still zoom! smoothly along the floor.  It was nice to see them play with them again today.  I’m looking forward to introducing Whybaby to all the wonders of being 1 year old just like we did with Widget!

After playdate and a quick lunch, Widget and I both took a long nap in his big boy bed (day 2!).  Then Gramma helped us get out the baby clothes.  Widget immediately climbed into the box of clothes, handing us each as we came to it, and we sorted them for the wash.  First the 3-6 month clothes, then the 0-3 month clothes, then the (scarce!) newborn clothes and those adorable little t-shirts that fold over and snap on the side.  I’d forgotten all about those little guys!  Looks like we’ve got plenty of everything except newborn and perhaps a couple preemie outfits.  Since this baby is definitely coming early now, I think we’ll run out to the baby store later in the week and grab a couple more tiny outfits.  Sleepers and those long-sleeve t-shirts that snap on the side and have little mitten pockets to protect newborn fingernails from scratching his little baby face at night.  Remember those?  I know that babies are only that little for a very short time, but when Widget came early and just swam in his 0-3 month clothes (the going-home outfit was twice as long as it should be!), and then lost weight on top of that, it just made me sad.  I don’t want to be sad with this baby.  I love this baby and I have fought too hard to bring him to term as a healthy kid, and I know that he’ll be my last one on top of that.  So Gramma and I will go out later in the week (as soon as I’m up to it!) and buy him a couple of tiny new outfits, and we’ll enjoy it.

I enjoyed today.  It was hard, and there was a lot of pain, but it was lovely to see our friends this morning, to sort through baby clothes and finish moving things from the nursery into Widget’s big boy room this afternoon (admittedly, I didn’t carry much, if anything at all), and to have other friends stop by this evening.  It was really nice, and I hope that I’ll be up to going out tomorrow to get some air.  Since we’re so close to birth, the doctor is okay with it if I’m okay with it, so off we go!
