Yesterday was almost a total wash. Much pain, no activity, much lying on the couch while Widget played with Gramma and Grampa and Daddy went to work. There was a moment of beauty after we finally got Widget to bed and finished wrapping presents — Grampa had brought a Christmas tree to our house, unbeknownst to us, strung it with lights, and set it up in the perfect corner. When we came upstairs to bed, we saw it, and the four of us sat on the couches and enjoyed the tiny white lights, something we didn’t even know we were missing until it arrived.
Today was better. Widget found the tree early this morning and has played near it off and on all day. He spent a good amount of time tonight investigating the lights and following the cords around the tree, through the holes between the branches, and talking to himself as he figures out how it works. Amazing. Then he decorated it with his red piece of yarn, very intricately weaving it in and out, and then pulling it back off.
Unfortunately, Uncle Outdoors still hasn’t made it here for Christmas. We’re all really bummed about that, but the planes simply aren’t available. They’re overbooked and undersupplied due to the snows out West. Hopefully he will be here on Christmas Eve.
Widget is doing well in his big boy room … day 4 of that, and day 4 of getting up early and being stubborn going to bed. This morning he woke up at 6 and came running into our room for some cuddles and TV time. After a little Bear in the Big Blue House (for him) and a little more sleep (for me), we went downstairs to eat cereal and toast.
I decided to treat today as a “found” day. Like a snow day, a “found” day is a day where the expected couldn’t happen, for whatever reason, and we are free to spend the day however we wish. It’s not a day for chores, or laundry, or mowing the lawn. It’s a special day, a day out of time, and I was determined to spend it as such.
I went … out. Daddy took me over to my favorite hair salon and I got my mommy cut layered and blended and pampered, and it looks really cute now. Really probably the cutest it’s been in years, and it felt so decadent spending a whole hour (and too much money) on myself! Then Daddy took me out to lunch and we went to Target to complete our baby supply list. He parked me in the baby section and shopped the rest of the store, and I filled my cart with diapers (easy to do!), wipes, baby wash, lotion, and teensy tiny bibs and such. We got EVERYTHING on our list! We’re now completely ready, including additional little newborn size clothes (courtesy my NY friend) and those adorable long sleeve side snap t-shirts with mittens, courtesy Walmart.com. It’s all washed and in the nursery, ready to go.
All I have left to do is pack my bag and reassemble the car seat, pack-and-play, baby gym, and swing from Widget’s babyhood. I’ve finished the Christmas cards; bought, wrapped, and mailed the Christmas presents; submitted the proposal to NASA that I’ve been working on; and caught up (mostly) on my email. With everything crossed off my list, the baby is sure to come soon!
Speaking of which, this is my 90th post on Toddler Planet. I know that the 100th post is typically a time for reflection and a “100 things about me” post. Wouldn’t it be great, though, if the 100th post of this blog, created to stimulate conversation about raising intellectually curious kids while I was on bed rest with this child, would be the announcement of Whybaby’s arrival?
I think it would be just about perfect.
Welcome to my world, Toddler Planet. I'm WhyMommy, just your average everyday
