Baby Update

Nope, no baby yet.  And we hit 38 weeks tomorrow.  I never imagined we’d make it this far.  I was so sure that he would be a Christmas baby, premature or preterm at least, and I’m so amazed at each day that we get to spend together with him still in the womb, because it means that Whybaby will be healthier, stronger … and I get another day to get things ready around here for him!  Of course, if he doesn’t come soon, I get to start packing up the preemie/newborn clothes … wouldn’t that be AWESOME?

Today is the worst kind of screaming, hollering back pain even though I’m back in bed.

Yesterday was tough, a solo day while Daddy worked.  We had a playdate with a 2-year-old friend, his 8-week-old baby sister, and his fully-recovered mom.  I really can’t believe she’s so fully recovered, but she said she was fine at 3 weeks after birth.  Sure, her C-section scar was still tender then when her 2 year old ran into it for a hug, but she said she’s really fine.  Wha?  Really?  I have new hope for a return to Life after our birth.  I’m still really quite nervous about it, as we think that Widget’s birth caused my back/nerve pain to begin with, but it’s nice to be reminded that life does return to normal and that it will all be okay again.

Monday was spent in bed too, as was Saturday.  But on Sunday we went out for a Weekend Adventure that started with breakfast OUT and finished up at the hoity-toity Baby Store In The Suburbs.  We had a couple more things to finish up on our list (anyone know where to find comfy jersey sheets for the bassinet attachement on a pack and play?  All I can find are scratchy cotton/poly ones), and then Widget played on the toddler cars for a little while.  We had a great time until another 2 year old we were chatting with decided to run into me at full speed for a big hug.  No warning, no explanation, no kidding … he ran SMACK! into my giant belly and giggled.  To his credit, his father was appalled and took him away soon after.  I think I was more flabbergasted than anything else, but of course I laughed it off and said it was fine.  Weird, though.

Reading back over this post, it appears to be totally devoid of content.  In keeping with my attempt to post substantive articles/commentary about science and work and such, I’ll at least provide this link to an article about a new approach to working hours.  The best possible approach, actually, in my opinion.  The AP restates Best Buy’s position as, “The official policy for this post-face-time, location-agnostic way of working is that people are free to work wherever they want, whenever they want, as long as they get their work done.”  Yeah.  That’s my kind of flex time.  Isn’t the most important aspect of work that the actual WORK get done?  Wonder if I can pitch this at my interview on Friday….

Devoid of content? Girlfriend, you’ve been hanging out with me tooooo long. Funny thing is, I was totally enjoying the post, devoid and all.

Looks like a lot of us are struggling with posts in the new year, actually. Perhaps that added to my dissatisfaction with the writing today. Thing is, I wouldn’t mind if I were making really good progress on my proposal. But I sat with my laptop all morning (Widget was at the zoo with some little friends) and didn’t make Jack for progress. Tonight Daddy is putting Widget to bed and I’m writing. We’ll both sit side by side with our laptops, internet off, and get some real work done. I’m looking forward to it … it’s like a date!
